Public transport

London has an excellent public transport system; a guide to all services can be found on the Transport for London (TfL) site, tfl.gov.uk. You should either use your credit or debit card for contactless payment, or purchase an Oyster card. Full details here. You will pay more than twice as much if you buy tickets for each journey.

Underground (subway, tube)

Particularly useful is the Underground Map. You can also pick up a copy at most tube stations.

Bus Network

Look at the bus page of the TfL site. There is a live bus checker app, with versions for Windows, Android and iOS.

Taxis

Despite the excellent public transport system, should you need a taxi, you can find rates and telephone numbers here. If you need a taxi to and from one of the London airports, it can be a lot cheaper to book one in advance. A useful company is Express Airport Transport.

Time Out started life as a weekly listings magazine, but now has a comprehensive web site. You can still pick up the magazine from any of the stations on Tuesday morning, or you can pick up a copy at any time from one of these locations.

For a list of events, restaurants and pubs, local news, visit the London SE1 community website.
